EWBNZ is an organisation of professionals and students who share a vision to confront global challenges of poverty, sustainable development and social inequity by undertaking initiatives that will directly improve the quality of life in communities within New Zealand and in the South Pacific region.

The foundations of EWB-NZ began in 2006 by a group of Auckland-based engineering students under the name PULSE. In 2008 this group formed an EWB branch in New Zealand.

Independent of this, a group from the University of Canterbury had recognised the need for an organisational body for engineering aid work and concluded that EWB, given its success in Australia, could also be applied successfully in New Zealand.

In 2008, both groups came together to officially form EWB-NZ, starting with two student chapters in Auckland and Christchurch Universities. From there EWB-NZ has expanded to include three professional chapters in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.
